I just received this beautiful illustration in my email the other day. It's by my good friend, the talented Mr. Dubious Lee.

She looks like she could this century's reboot of the bust of Nefertiti- Both have the same refined facial features. Mr. Lee's technique has echoes of the late and great illustrator Antonio.

You can see more of Mr. Lee's work via this link.

Seen on the Street - Graffiti Effexx

Images by Trickymaus.

Because I have "A.D.H.D.", meaning I'm always bugging out and have the attention span of a gnat, I love to look at everything when I'm out on the street. Doesn't matter if I'm walking or riding in a car, I love to visually devour everything around me. Here are a few pieces of Graffiti art I noticed within a 2 block radius of my work in Hollywood, near Selma and Cahuenga. Pretty cool - if anyone knows the artists to credit for these pieces, please leave a comment or contact me.

ART ATTACK - BANSKY COMMEMORATES 3RD ANNIVERSARY OF HURRICANE KATRINA

Bansky Art images courtesy of Gawker.com and Bansky

Here are the images of artist Bansky's commemorative works recently created on the streets of New Orleans recently. Not only does the artist make poignant statements on the aftermath of Hurricane Katina,.

He connects these works with that of Fred Ratke, also known as the "Grey Ghost", Ratke was known as a graffiti crusader who would paint over any graffiti with standard issue grey paint, no matter what color the background original color of the wall.

I wonder if Brad Pitt had any inspiration in Bansky's choice in New Orleans? Mr. Pitt and Ms. Angelina Jolie were photographed in Los Angeles last year at an exihibition of Bansky's work. Madonna received a commissioned portrait of herself given by her husband Guy Ritchie on her 50th birthday. The portrait reportedly cost $50,000.

You can see the images and original posting through Gawker via this link.

One of Beijing's rising young art stars, Li Shurui is 25 years old and graduated, in 20004, with a degree from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute's Oil Paint department. She currently resides in Beijing and is partnered with painter Chen Jie. Additonal information on Chen Jie can be found via this link.

Her art career started while she was an undergraduate with an installation, called "Seeing Mountains", of a long line of fabric cubes that floated across a lake in a remote part of Yunnan Province inhabited by a matriarchal ethnic minority tribe.

She then developed into large scaled air brushed abstract paintings with a vague international familiarity, but at a recent gallery group show, she had an instillation work consisting of an open elevator stuck between floors illuminated by flourescent lights.

This focus on lights illustrates Ms. Li's obsession with light, especially synthetic lights, manifesting in how her paintings are painstakingly recreated from photographs, enlarged into abstract kaleidescopic images. Examples illustrative of this work are the images at the top of the posting and directly above this paragraph.

When asked in a recent article interview with The International Tribune/New York Times on who inspires her, she mentions "seventh-century ruler Wu Zetian, who through a combination of brains, beauty, unsparing ambition and tenacious hard work, became China's first and only female empress".

By stating such a person as an ispiration does show that Ms. Li is a feminist by nature, even though she has stated that "she is still too young, still too much in the stage of discovering herself, to figure out whether she considers herself a feminist or not."

You can read the IHT/NY Times Article "China's Female Artists Quietly Emerge" via this link and view the accompanying photo slide show via this link.

Ms. Li is represented by the 82 Republic Gallery in Hong Kong and by Godehuis Gallery inernationally (Beijing, London and New York).

ART ATTACK / GOT TO HAVE IT!!!! ROYAL/T SHOP COSPLAY CHAOS

Royal/T Art Space is the Zion for Anime-Maniacs in L.A.!! This unique space is a multi faceted entity incorporating a fusion of an art gallery, boutique and restaurant/theatre cafe.

The genesis of Royal/T started when owner Susan Hancock, successful entrepeneur and "ModernJapanArt" collector approached Takaya Goto and Lesley Chi of Goto Design NY to conceive a space to showcase her extensive "Mod.Jap.Art" collection, with the help of architect Kulapat Yantrasast from wHY Architecture.

The duo came up with an concept inspired by the "Meido Kissa/Maid Cafe" phenom originating in Tokyo's Akihabara district. Since Akihabara is a manifistation of the 21st Century Digitalopolis (a la Blade Runner/Neuromancer), Royal/T not only has an art space to feature pieces from the Hancock collection, but carries the ANIME/CYBERPUNK/COSPLAY lifestyle into the connected boutique and cafe.

Cutting edge Japan-Artists such as Chiho Aoshima, Chinatsu Ban, Yayoi Deki, Mitsuhiro Ikeda, Izumi Kato, Hideaki Kawashima, Mahomi Kunikata, Yayoi Kusama, Mr., Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Mitsuhiro Okamoto, Aya Takano, Yuken Teruya, and Keisuke Yamamoto are represented in the collection. In addition, Western artists collected by Hancock include Ghada Amer, Stephan Balkenhol, Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Tracy Emin, Tom Freidman, Mark Grotjahn, Jim Hodges, Mike Kelley, Chris Ofili, Elizabeth Peyton, Richard Prince, Wilhelm Sasnal, Fred Tomaselli, Piotr Uklanski, Lisa Yuskavage.

The boutique carries various items directly connected to the artists featured in the gallery space, as well as items inspired and/or thematic of the movement. All items are noteworthy of "GOT TO HAVE IT!!!" status.

The cafe/restaurant continues the concept by featuring waitresses dressed in typical FRENCH MAID COSPLAY uniforms. The menu is based on a fusion of Japanese and CaliFrancais cuisine with traditional comfort foods such as "comfort" food and beverage classics like Curry Rice and Matcha Milk Tea as well as modern creations like Yuzu Shrimp Salad and Kyoto Sunset Tea. All dishes are served all day.

Royal/T is a runaway success since it's opening in late 2007, with loads of clients/customers/fans crowding daily to experience the complete lifestyle immersion.
